With a passion for many things Italian, she founded Cinema Italiano in Hawaii under the Friends of Italy umbrella and with the support of many, many inspired volunteers and special loyal sponsors. Today Ms. Balbo Parrent is the Executive Director of the 501c3 non-profit Cinema Italiano in Hawaii, a community partner of the Friends of Italy Society of Hawaii.

Why have an Italian film festival in Hawaii? The festival came about due to the yearning to enhance the cultural link between Hawaii and Italy. For eight years the festival successfully drew an audience who for fours days laughed and cried together as we watched the best of contemporary Italian film to arrive in Hawaii. The festival’s specialty is to focus on securing Italian tragic comedic films for its audience whenever possible. The upcoming discussion will focus on this genre of films, review the festival’s film archive and share with you what makes these films so special. Cinema Italiano in Hawaii is looking to host another festival in 2021!
