Series: This lecture is part of the 3rd series “From Italy to Hawaii: Connecting two worlds through art, science, and community,” which started in 2019 and features experts from all over Italy who discuss topics that affect both Italy and Hawaii.

Talk: Ground-based astronomy is very dependent upon the whims of the weather. While clement and clear weather is the minimum requirement for the astronomers to be able to conduct their observations, turbulence in the atmosphere could also greatly impact observations. In this talk Dr. Cherubini will explain how meteorology can be of service to astronomy, not only by predicting good weather, but also by anticipating when stars could be twinkling too much.

Presenter: Dr. Tiziana Cherubini was born in a small village in the Italian countryside near Rome. She studied Physics at the University of Rome, La Sapienza, and specialized in atmospheric physics during her Ph.D. at the University of Genoa. After working for half a year in the Operations Department of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts, in Reading, UK, she joined the University of Hawaii, Manoa, as Post-Doctoral fellow. In 2003 she was hired as Research Meteorologist and Lead Modeler for the then recently founded Mauna Kea Weather Center (http://mkwc.ifa.hawaii.edu). She is currently active in this position, while is also appointed with the title of affiliate Associate Researcher for the University of Hawaii, Manoa.

Zoom: Registered guests will receive a unique link prior to the event. Please setup your Zoom and familiarize with its features. You can review its short video tutorials (e.g., join a meetingconfiguring audio/videomeeting controlsmore topics) or full training (e.g., Zoom for education).
